about

La Filatura ("The Spinning") is the result of the one-week art residency Marcel·lí Bayer held at Konvent.0 in June, 2020.

Konvent.0 is a late XIX century nun’s convent and textile colony in the heart of Catalonia that has been converted into a multidisciplinary arts centre. It’s a place where many projects converge, especially those which have no place in the frame of the institutional culture.

This album was recorded in a vast empty hall, an old 800 m2 big derelict thread factory which stopped their production around 1970. Inside its walls, the rain leaks from the broken roof from time to time and the metallic smell of the chemicals remains in the air, still.

Music was fully improvised during the recording session: Bayer recorded one track after the next without listening to the previous ones until he felt that each piece was naturally done. All pieces were composed in Marcel·lí's mind in real time. Days after, he merged all recorded lines and the final pieces came along together, suddenly turning “alive” by themselves.

During this recording, Marcel·lí's main intention was to wake up the abandoned factory walls through sound, shake every inch of concrete and iron and make them speak out, shouting, crying and singing through his saxophones. Listening to it now, someone could affirm this is not a solo album, someone could think this music was somehow "dictated" by the souls who worked in the factory for so many years.

"La Filatura" is a tribute to all industrial workers from the past centuries, but also a direct question facing the present, involving diverse and unknown answers: who we are nowadays, where we come from and which is our spiritual role in life.

REVIEWS

"Bayer maakt op dit album experimentele muziek zonder dat hij daarvoor onconventionele technieken, aanpassingen van het instrument of andere hulpmiddelen nodig heeft. De muziek klinkt ook redelijk toegankelijk, al is geconcentreerd luisteren noodzakelijk om alle lagen en alle nuances te kunnen bevatten. La Filatura is een wonderlijk album dat een betoverende werking heeft en die ook na ettelijke draaibeurten blijft behouden."

"Bayer makes experimental music on this album without the need for unconventional techniques, instrument modifications or other aids. The music also sounds fairly accessible, although concentrated listening is necessary to be able to grasp all the layers and all the nuances. La Filatura is a wonderful album that has an enchanting effect and is preserved even after several spins." Gert Derkx, www.opduvel.com

"In fact my first association to this music was to Jan Garbarek's and Hilliard Ensemble's "Officium". "La Filatura" sounds equally
monumentally and can be regarded as a free improvised homologue of the Garbarek and Hilliard Ensemble masterpiece.
And, there is a spirit of ancient music here!
Bayer proves again that he is one of the most interesting saxophonist on Peninsula Iberica, and one of the most interesting baritone players worldwide." Maciej Lewenstein, PL
