about

Nonitz offers an hommage to Lee Konitz, one of the biggest names of jazz history.
His music has been part of my life for nearly 10 years. When I began to study jazz, the first solo I ever transcribed was his improvisation over Alone Together; I played Palo Alto on my admission exam for the Catalan college of music (ESMuC) and, just as it was meant to be, my final project before graduation in the spring of 2010 consisted of analyzing his music and writing arrangements over it, paving the way for this recording.
Jorge Rossy, who often plays with Konitz, introduced me to him. He gave him a letter of mine in which I explained the details for this project and enclosed a recording of my final exam, playing with the Nonitz nonet.
In that letter I also asked him if, during his stay in our city as part of that autumn’s Barcelona Jazz Festival, he would agree to collaborate with us in a possible recording of the arrangements. Lee Konitz supported the idea from the beginning and, after a few more letters and phone calls, we met one November morning at the Laietana Studios in Barcelona to record his invaluable collaboration with the nonet. I hope you enjoy it!
